When “Other” Is a Surprise

TPC members Jennifer Johnston and Tom Keydel will lead a service that addresses disability by looking at the difficulty of coping with unexpected “surprises” that ask for more than we might be comfortable offering. Jennifer will reflect on her work at Children’s Hospital with new parents who unexpectedly have a deaf child and who are trying to decide what they should do. Tom will reflect on his hearing loss and on his experience with the deaf community. The service will build upon the January theme of intention and will focus on how difficult it can be to arrive at a coherent intention when our need to understand “other” challenges our comfort and our capacity.
