Rev. Lilli Nye announced this fall that she is resigning as of June 30. This Sunday she will explore this unique stretch of time in her ten-year ministry with Theodore Parker Church, considering the complexity and ambiguity of remaining engaged together in community while anticipating her departure, of being here now while also being in a process of ending. It’s new territory for her and, possibly, for most of us. Lilli will reflect on her personal journey of learning to navigate this space as wakefully, intentionally, and open-heartedly as possible.

We now live in a time in which our divisions are felt so acutely and tragically, our need for unity is so urgent, and the possibilities for global community are closer than they have been since the primordial time described in the story of Babel. Part of our Unitarian Universalist practice is to strive to make bridges across difference and to rebuild human connection where it has become estranged. And yet the roots of our own tribalism are stubborn and deep. Are we up for it?

Introduction to the Story Day: The Tower of Babel. All children and Intro to the Story Day teachers meet in the Sanctuary at 10:30am for our fun-filled Time for All Ages as we introduce the story of the Tower of Babel. Then all children and their teachers move to their classrooms and further the introduction to this fascinating story of the need for mutual understanding and communication. There will be an all-congregational meeting following coffee hour and all are encouraged to attend. Babysitting will be available at that time and those children staying will be working downstairs in the large RE room and finishing the mural based on dreams and dreaming.

Lilli Nye, honors the 100th anniversary of the Lawrence Textile Strike, also known as the “Bread and Roses Strike” or the “Three Loaves Strike” (in reference to the amount of bread each family would lose from their already-meager rations if the threatened pay reduction went into effect). As a successful strike carried out by immigrant, mainly female, and ethnically diverse workers, it carries forward our “David & Goliath” theme. We’ll consider some of the historic struggles of the American labor movement and how similar challenges manifest today.
