Finding Courage to “Let Go”

We are delighted to welcome Johanna (Jo) Murphy, our former director of religious exploration, back to Theodore Parker Church. Jo has completed her master of divinity at Harvard Divinity School, and is scheduled to see the Ministerial Fellowship Committee (MFC) in December, seeking Fellowship as a Unitarian Universalist Minister.
From Jo: “When I was in seventh grade I decided I wanted to be a minister because the idea of creating social change from the pulpit, inside a church’s walls, felt ‘safe.’ Now, as I prepare to see the MFC, my desire to become a minister remains the same, while the reasons differ. I am no longer sure I see myself ministering inside a church’s walls and as the religious landscape around us shifts, many of my peers are questioning these walls as well. Amidst our questions of how to best serve a hurting and changing world, we wonder not only how to gain courage amongst newness, but how to also gain courage in the process of letting go. This morning we explore what type of courage is needed in letting go of our ideas of what church has to be in the process of creating new and dynamic spaces that serve our individual and larger faith.”
