SUMMARY:Music on Centre presents Guy Davis
DESCRIPTION:Guy Davis is a two-time\, back-to-back Grammy nominee for Best Traditional Blues\, a musician\, actor\, author\, and songwriter. Guy uses a blend of roots\, blues\, folk\, rock\, rap\, spoken word\, and world music to comment on\, and address the frustrations of social injustice\, touching on historical events\, and common life struggles. His background in theater is pronounced through the lyrical storytelling of songs “God’s Gonna Make Things Over” about the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre\, “Welcome to My World”\, and “Got Your Letter In My Pocket”. His storytelling is sometimes painful\, deep\, and real\, an earthy contrast to modern-day commercial music\, meant to create thought\, underlined by gentle tones from his guitar or banjo fingerpicking. [from Guy’s website] \nAdmission is $25. Cash preferred; cards are okay. Outstanding refreshments available during intermission.

SUMMARY:Music on Centre presents Windborne
DESCRIPTION:“The most exciting vocal group in a generation\,” Windborne’s captivating show draws on the singers’ deep roots in traditions of vocal harmony\, while the absolute uniqueness of their artistic approach brings old songs into the present. Known for the innovation of their arrangements\, their harmonies are bold and anything but predictable. \nWith a 20-year background studying polyphonic music around the world\, Lauren Breunig\, Jeremy Carter-Gordon\, Lynn Rowan\, and Will Rowan share a vibrant energy onstage with a blending of voices that can only come from decades of friendship alongside dedicated practice. The ensemble shifts effortlessly between drastically different styles of music\, drawing their audience along on a journey that spans continents and centuries\, illuminating and expanding on the profound power and variation of the human voice. \n \nBut there’s another\, crucial dimension to Windborne that guides and roots their artistry. They are adherents to folk music’s longtime alliance with social activism\, labor and civil rights\, and other movements that champion the oppressed\, the poor\, and the disenfranchised. Their songs burst with lyrics that\, while penned decades or centuries ago\, still ring true in modern times\, and Windborne’s dynamic harmonies breathe new life into these songs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdmission is $25. Cash preferred\, but credit card payments are possible. For information or to reserve tickets\, go to musiconcentre@gmail.com. All are welcome!

Give more if you can\, less if you can’t. All are welcome and no one will be turned away! SUMMARY:"Transfiguration: German and American Song"
DESCRIPTION:In concert: James Dargan\, baritone\, and Mark Whitlock\, piano \n“Transfiguration: German and American Song” explores music’s ability to transcend limiting labels. Musicians James Dargan and Mark Whitlock take the high romanticism of Mahler\, put it together with modern American songs (by James Dargan\, with texts by Langston Hughes)\, and show exactly how thin the line is between these two musical ways of speaking. \nThe concert features James Dargan and Mark Whitlock\, who created the concert program “Oh\, Glory!” to celebrate the work of African American classical musicians.  James and Mark brought “Oh Glory” to the Theodore Parker Church in January\, 2017.  They continue to offer this program at churches\, schools and concert halls throughout the northeast. \nJames Dargan is a New York-based soloist\, choral singer and teaching artist and performs widely in the U.S. Mark Whitlock\, pianist\, is based in the Boston area\, and has been collaborating and performing with James since 2016. \nAn additional note from the artists: “We also want our audience to know that we prioritize having a good time\, so come ready to be moved!” \n

SUMMARY:Music on Centre: Mustard's Retreat with Marcia Feldman
DESCRIPTION:Mustard’s Retreat had been performing as a duo for about 40 years all across the United States when they became a trio by adding the glorious voice of Libby Glover\, long-time friend and musical collaborator. The duo\, consisting of David Tamulevich and Michael Hough\, has always been known for their skill in combining original witty and whimsical songs with other creations that are insightful and profound. Tamulevich describes their sound as “defiantly hopeful”. \nPlaying different combinations of guitar\, dulcimer\, pennywhistle\, harmonica and vocals\, the trio continues that tradition with perfection. Since the release of the trio’s CD\, called “Make Your Own Luck”\, the group has been receiving even more national attention\, with the CD listed as # 6 in the country on the Folk DJ chart. Two of the songs that are hitting the mark are “Make Your Own Luck\,” a bouncy\, optimistic piece of advice\, and “I’m Gonna Walk It\,” a song by Ellie Grace about the Women’s March. \nAn earlier song\, “Ours is a Simple Faith\,” is often used as an affirmation of peace and justice in places of worship and other organizations. Their songs are appropriate for all ages\, including a funny little ditty called “It’s Got Teeth.” \nThe opening act is Marcia Feldman\, an accomplished guitarist and singer from Westwood. She has produced four recordings; Stand Up\, Believe in Spring\, Hospice Music and Between the Worlds. In addition to her versatile vocal style\, she plays soothing classical guitar music at the bedside for people at the end of life to ease their final days and runs a palliative care program in a retirement village. She also performs in churches and coffeehouses in Massachusetts where she is sought after for her haunting and elegant vocal style. \nTheodore Parker Church Parish Hall\, 1859 Centre Street\, West Roxbury\, MA 02132 \nTickets: $20 for adults; $10 for 21 and under; $40 family maximum \nReservations: musiconcentre@gmail.com or call 617-327-0542 \nDesserts and beverages available before the show and during intermission. \n

SUMMARY:Green Line X-Tension in concert
DESCRIPTION:Join Green Line X-Tension for an evening of vocal jazz\, with special guests Dave Howard on guitar and Steve Gutherz on piano\, in the sanctuary on Sunday\, Nov. 5\, at 7 p.m. They will share songs from their upcoming EP Green Line X-Tension\, as well as new material. $15 suggested donation at the door. The vocal group Green Line X-Tension grew out of Point of Departure (POD\,) a student-led vocal jazz ensemble at Berklee College of Music. Michael J. Johnson (baritone/director/arranger)\, a Berklee professor\, has served as faculty advisor for POD since 2012. In late 2016\, Johnson decided to form a vocal group to perform and record his vocal arrangements and compositions. After recruiting his wife and fellow Berklee professor Ani Johnson (alto)\, he called on current and former members of POD\, and several stellar vocalists answered his call: Nicole Roberts (soprano)\, Sarah Bernadette (soprano 2/alto)\, Robert Pate (tenor)\, Zach Ivy (baritone)\, and Skip Lewan (bass).
