DESCRIPTION:All are invited to the beautiful greenspace of the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry (UUUM) for great jazz from The Makanda Project with the company of friends and neighbors. These shows are FREE. Bring a picnic blanket or lawn chair and stay a while!\n\nThe Makanda Project is an ensemble dedicated to performing the previously unrecorded compositions of Makanda Ken McIntyre.  The group is based in Boston (Makanda’s hometown) and was formed in 2005.  Since then\, The Makanda Project has been giving regular free concerts in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood and also performing outside of Boston—sharing what they believe is something unique and special about Makanda’s music\, and adding their own individual and collective voices to his compositions.

DESCRIPTION:Yoga teacher Keith Beasley is offering two introductory\, complementary yoga classes on Thursday\, September 20 and 27 at 10 a.m. After attending one or both free classes\, if enough people are interested in continuing\, he will schedule a series of classes at TPC. The cost for the series would be $10/class.Classes would last about 75 minutes. \nThe main part of the class will be a combination of yoga postures and breathing exercises. Relaxation exercises will also be a part of the class. SUMMARY:Film: Hope in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:Brian Cartwright will show a short film\, “Hope in a Changing Climate\,” and lead a discussion about methods of ecological restoration for degraded lands around the world.  \nThe filmmaker is John D. Liu\, who founded a global organization called Ecosystem Restoration Camps.  His vision is to set up camps in locations where volunteers learn by restoring damaged and degraded landscapes to health and productivity. John has been learning and documenting methods for this kind of restoration over the past twenty years in collaboration with governments and environmental organizations. \nThe 25-minute film documents the project that first got him involved in this work. Spearheaded by scientists and the Chinese government\, the farmers and livestock herders of a remote area were mobilized to work on a massive landscape repair project\, motivated by a commitment that they would be the beneficiaries of the results. SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Luminaria in Roslindale
DESCRIPTION:On Winter Solstice\, Thursday\, December 21\, stroll among 500 glowing lumieres in Adams Park\, Sophia’s Grotto\, and the Roslindale business district. Sing with us at 6:30 p.m. in Adams Park.  Song books will be available to share. Luminaria is an opportunity to bring together members of our community across cultures and faiths to share observation of the longest night and the new lengthening of days. Volunteers welcome and needed for preparing candles (12/13)\, singing rehearsal (12/15) and placing and lighting lumieres (12/21). Contact Karen Kirchoff to inquire.

DESCRIPTION:Join the UU Urban Ministry for the 3:30 p.m. matinee of Black Nativity\, Langston Hughes’ gospel play of joy\, hope\, and liberation at the Paramount Theater. Black Nativity retells the Christmas story through Gospel music\, blues\, and African-inspired dance. Tickets are still available at emersonparamount.com. \nBarry Gaither\, founder and director of the National Center of Afro-American Artists\, will join us for a reception in the lounge at the Paramount at 2:15 p.m. to share the history of Black Nativity in Boston and how the show is mounted every year entirely with local adults and children.
