Bread and Roses – January 29, 2012
This week’s worship service, led by Rev. Lilli Nye, honors the 100th anniversary of the Lawrence Textile Strike, also known as the “Bread and Roses Strike” or the “Three Loaves Strike” (in reference to the amount of bread each family would lose from their already-meager rations if the threatened pay reduction went into effect). As a successful strike carried out by immigrant, mainly female, and ethnically diverse workers, it carries forward our “David & Goliath” theme. An illustrated historical account of West Roxbury by Boston historian Anthony Sammarco is the first of several free public events scheduled this year at Theodore Parker Church in West Roxbury in celebration of its 300th anniversary. Mr. Sammarco, author of 60 pictorial histories of Boston and its neighborhoods, will give his presentation at 2 pm Sunday, Jan. 22, in the church sanctuary at 1859 Center St. in West Roxbury. Teacher/Teen Day, David & Goliath. All children and Teacher/Teen Day teachers meet in their group rooms for their own individual chalice lighting. The younger group will be creating images based on David & Goliath that will be used in our mural for this story. The older group will be bringing closure to the UUSC and their Guest at Your Table project. All families who have been collecting money in their “Guest at Your Table” boxes are asked to drop them off in the parlor prior to church.
