Universal Welcome

Remember Marlo Thomas’s 1972 story and songbook, Free to Be You and Me? It was a game-changing look at how we are different and yet the same. It was published nearly 20 years before the Americans with Disabilities Act. Even later was the Disability Act 2005 that introduced the idea of Universal Design. Slowly we are coming to understand the need to design in a way that is welcoming to all. But what about our historic buildings? How do we hold our history and still change enough to offer Universal Welcome?
